Dear Customers and Friends of Seajet!

One year ago, ISF (10+2) got introduced to the importing trade. 2009 served as a phase-in period to allow everyone to get familiar with the requirements of this new law.

The count-down towards enforcement of ISF filings has ended on January 26, 2010, when the regulations went into full effect.

Seajet took this new regulation serious from the very first day and commenced with steps at the end of 2008 to set-up internal procedures to deal with ISF.

We have had many in-house training sessions and sent staff members to ISF seminars and Customs outreach meetings to assure that your Seajet Team members do fully understand what they need to do to take care of your ISF filing needs!

One year ago, we also invested in an electronic ISF filing system, which connects us directly to Customs, 365/24/7.

You may have seen regular references to the “SCORECARD” and been wondering what it is all about.

ISF scorecards are issued monthly by Customs to every importer in the United States.

It shows how many filings were submitted on your behalf since ISF filings commenced in January of 2009.

Customs emails a report to Seajet every month, covering all importers who nominated Seajet to be their ISF filing agent.

This scorecard will be made available to Seajet customers upon request.

If you are not a Seajet client yet but would like to explore the many services Seajet can offer to you, including filing your ISF, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

An example of an actual scorecard is shown here below:

How does ISF filing work?

ISF information must be transmitted to Customs 24 hours prior to loading of the cargo overseas.

To assure timely collection of all data, Seajet has set an internal deadline of 96 hours, which provides us, and you, with a time safety cushion, which may be needed to verify and confirm all information.

Once we know about your shipment (this could start at the purchase order level), we do continuously communicate with our foreign offices. When necessary, we send them, as well as you, reminders, when important information has not been received. We tell you what is missing and why we need your assistance.

Transmitting ISF information to Customs triggers an almost instant response. The reply indicates a “response number”, a (filing) date and time stamp and the filing status of your ISF, which you want to be “ISF ACCEPTED”.

If you opted-in, our electronic ISF filing system will send you actual copies of the completed ISF form.

Regardless of who files your ISF and where, the importer is 100% responsible to assure a timely and completely accurate filing. Regardless of your shipping terms. Even if the shipping costs are prepaid by the supplier!

Seajet assures complete and accurate ISF information by talking to you right here, where you are. We know you, we have a good idea of what you do and we have a personal relationship with you, which is invaluable when it comes to “taking care of business”.

Not only are we your freight forwarder, we are also your customs broker. As your broker, we know your goods and assure accurate product classifications. This is very important because the tariff classification is part of the ISF filing and must be totally accurate.

Of course, ISF is a hot button issue and some competitors are going around trying to sell the idea, that it is much better to have your ISF filed by their office in the loading port.

Really?

Do you want to entrust this to somebody far, far away, who does not even know you?

Think about language barriers, miss interpretations, missed details, typos, incomplete customs tariff numbers.

Do you really want to rely on an entry level documentation clerk, whose command of the English language may be very limited?! Somebody who does not  know you, your company and  your products?

We do not think so!

And that is why all the ISF filing work is being performed right here, in the Seajet offices, where you have a knowledgeable and dedicated team of 6 customs brokers and 9 import specialists, who care about you and look after your business and your best interests!

Please feel free to contact me by phone or email, if you have any questions or concerns!

Sincerely yours,

Ronald W. Hiemann, CEO
