Where Are All The Containers?

(More trucker strikes in China?)

Dear Customers and Friends of Seajet!

As you probably know, the Chinese truckers’ strike in the south of China (Shenzhen, Yantian/Shekou) was short-lived and has not lasted more than 1 ˝ days.

However, based on an article by the JoC (Journal of Commerce), there are some who fear such strikes may occur again in the future as truckers want to share financially in the recent and sudden shipping boom. The ocean carriers are certainly doing a lot better and I suppose one needs to see if the truckers will have the political strength or clout for future strikes to push their agendas.

On another somewhat related subject we just came across another article from the Journal of Commerce taking aim at explaining the current container shortage.

Please click here to read this very interesting article.

Basically container manufacturers in China all but shut down their plants in 2009 and where completely unprepared (together with carriers) when demand practically exploded starting in late 2009.

This situation has been further compounded by the slower cruising speeds of vessels making it much longer for containers to return to Asia. By some accounts experts view the equipment shortage almost more of a problem than the shortage of container space on vessels.

We thought that you may find this article of interest.

Sincerely yours,

Andreas Bauermeister,
President
