Westbound Trans-Atlantic
EUROPE to USA
Update
GENERAL RATE INCREASE
Effective 1 April 2010

Dear Customers and Friends of Seajet!

We did last write about the European market during August and September of 2009.

In the meantime, we have distributed plenty of bad news concerning the container back-log problems in Asia and the very large rate increases from Asia to the USA.

Our most recent announcement of a couple of days ago concerns Canada and if you missed this news blast, you can read it here "Canada Rates Spiraling Up!"

Several of the shipping lines servicing the Europe to USA trade lanes have now followed on the heels of announcements made by Asian carriers and have notified the trade, that their rates and / or surcharges will now go up as well.

Those increases will be effective with onboard dates of 1 April 2010 and, we hate to say, this is not an April Fool's Day announcement!

The increase will generally be $300/20ft and $400/40ft container. See a couple of those announcements here  1) ACL, 2) Hamburg-Süd, 3) MOL, 4) Hapag-Lloyd

APL has a full basket of surcharges with varying effective dates. We have posted the complete schedule here for your reading displeasure!

MSC has not distributed an official announcement as yet but it is a fair bet to say, they rates will go up, too. In fact, I heard this morning that the MSC increase will very likely be $400/20ft and $500/40ft container.

In general, it is important to add here that all the vessels remaining in the Euro trade lanes are booked solid. Space is very tight and over-bookings are now common.

Not quite the mess (back-log) we are dealing with in Asia but something to remember when you review your European Spring and Summer shipping schedules!

Like you have read in other recent Seajet newsletters, please do not shoot the messenger! We believe that you will appreciate, albeit most reluctantly, the news we distribute because it provides you with advance notice and will be helpful when you consider new purchases and your landed-costs.

Sincerely yours,

Ronald W. Hiemann, CEO
