Peak Season Surcharge Arrived!

Is It Here To Stay Until November 30, 2011 ... ?

Dear Customers and Friends of Seajet:

After postponing the Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for two full months, all carriers in the Far East and the Indian sub-continent have now implemented it effective August, 15, 2011 (to US East, Gulf and West Coasts). The amounts are $320/20’ – $400/40’ – $450/40’HC -  $505/45’. The official expiration date for the PSS is November 30, 2011.

The big question is will the carriers show enough resolve to maintain it? The minute one of them decides to reduce or eliminate it from its tariffs in an attempt to increase market share, all others will follow within days. The other possibility is that all carries will keep the PSS intact but reduce base rates to increase competitiveness.

Since last October ocean rates have been going down apart from short lived attempts back on May 1 and then again when BAF was increased July 1st. It is a fact that carriers have too much capacity in the market and the current economic outlook in Europe and the USA does not suggest drastic increases in demand during the remainder of the year. However it is also a fact that basically all carriers are sliding back into red ink after having one of the most profitable years in 2010 (and one of the least profitable in 2009 which put some carriers close to bankruptcy). So there is a possibility that they would make use of their anti-trust immunity in order to protect their profitability. Their track record would not support this though.

In my humble opinion I believe that the PSS will remain intact but base rates will continue to erode absorbing some or all of the increases that are being achieved by the implementation of the PSS. However this is really all it is, my opinion.

As always, Seajet will adjust its rates based on any increases but also on any subsequent decreases as you will have noticed on your invoices over the years.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at any time.

Thank you very much for your support and,

best regards,

Andreas Bauermeister
President
