In a little more than 5 weeks, new security regulations will go into effect, as mandated by The Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Borders Protection Agency (CBP), formerly known as U.S. Customs. Effective October 15, 2008, maritime container coming across United States borders must be sealed with ISO/DIS 17712 compliant high security seals. These seals meet standards for unique numbering, strength, durability and resistance to tampering. This new requirement may very well complicate life for shippers and importers because there is no guarantee that enough of these new seals will be available to meet the demand.
This new regulation does apply to some 710,000 shippers, which will now
have to follow these new requirements on inbound shipments by ocean;
truck and rail as of Compliant container seal products come from compliant companies. Ask your current supplier to use only ISO compliant and approved container seals. If they do not use these new container seals, you are potentially at risk of having your import containers delayed by additionally ordered inspections. Not only will this cause delays, it will also incur substantial additional charges which your company will have to pay. In a nutshell, you do not want this to happen to your cargo! Please make sure to confirm with your foreign suppliers, that they are aware of this new regulation and demand confirmation, that they will use only these new ISO/DIS 17712 compliant seals.
If you wish to review more details about these new seals, one
