Shanghai Trucker Strike

Dear Customers and Friends of Seajet!

Yesterday we were made aware of the beginning of a trucker strike in Shanghai and were updated today and it looks like that this strike may cause delays for any freight leaving this week and if so it will mean that vessels will most likely be overbooked the following week as well. Here is what we have received so far.

Trucker Strike Hits Shanghai in Protest over Surging Fuel Costs and Low Wages (Tyler Durden/Stratfor).

There has been a trucker strike in the Waigaoqiao zone in Shanghai on the morning of April 20. The protests were in one of Shanghai’s busiest container ports and they were the result of rising fuel prices and low wages. In 2008, we saw similar strikes over fuel prices as taxi drivers took to the streets across China, highlighting how inflation can easily translate into social issues.

Strike Report from Phoenix Shanghai

Today is Wednesday and it is the first day some of the truckers have gone on strike in Shanghai. Several trucks have been attacked with violence because of their unwillingness to participate in the strike. Today we are not seeing serious influence on the Shanghai port because most of the carriers’ cut-off day is on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. If the Chinese government can solve it by tomorrow our cargo will be arranged as usual. However if the strike continues we may have issues. We will provide daily information to you as available.

Strike Report from Phoenix Shanghai

The strike is ongoing in Shanghai and today it has been difficult picking up empty containers from the terminal. Most of the suppliers are well aware of the current situation. We believe that some of our containers will be delayed one week due to this strike. We will advise each office abroad about any containers not making their scheduled sailing dates as a result of the strike.

At this point it is obviously impossible to say how things will progress. However if this strike goes on causing delays it is fair to assume that there will be a domino effect. As always we shall keep you up to date with how the strike progresses and if there are any shipments of yours that are being delayed.

Best regards,

Andreas Bauermeister
President
